Surpassing the Ordinary

Choosing the Best Contractor

If you’ve been through a home remodeling project before, you may have great things to say or a nightmare that you wouldn’t want to relive. How can you avoid the heartache and sleepless nights that can come with a home remodeling project or new home build? Know how to choose the best contractor for the job! Your contractor will manage every aspect of the project from start to finish and should be reliable and knowledgeable. Read to learn some helpful tips for qualifying the right contractor for your project.
1. Know what you want- in detail. Before looking for a contractor you should have a plan for your project and the materials you’d like to use.
2. Now you can ask for recommendations and referrals from friends. If you know someone who’s had work done recently, ask to see their project and talk to them about their experience from design to completion. Other trusted resources for contractor reviews include Angie’s List and Houzz, to name a few. Be sure to do as much research as possible. If a company has a bad review, what are the details? If there was a problem with a project was it resolved by the contractor?
3. Time to interview! Choose at least three or four contractors to interview. Introduce your plan and make sure they’ve previously completed projects of similar size and scope. Do they have a website and portfolio? How many projects do they typically have at once? Ask for referrals from recent projects and find out how long they’ve worked with their subcontractors. The Better Business Bureau and an internet search may reveal valuable (and positive or not-so-positive) information about your potential contractors.
4. Are they licensed? All worthy contractors will be state-licensed and carry insurance. You can ask to see both the license and insurance certificate. Licenses ensure that your contractor is knowledgeable in building specifications in your area, and liability insurance will cover any damages that could happen during the project.
5. Narrow your list even further- find out if you’re potential contractors utilize an electronic project management system, that can be accessed by customers to streamline and simplify the project. For example, Epic Building Company uses an innovative online project management application called Co-Construct, a one-stop interface where you can communicate with your contractor, approve project costs, track progress and more. Co-Construct helps ensure that your home remodeling or home building project remains enjoyable.
6. Let the bidding begin! After doing your homework you should ask for bids from your top two or three choices. Keep in mind, it’s not always best to go with the lowest price! The lowest bid may not provide the quality or experience you are seeking. Remember, top notch customer service generally doesn’t come with bargain basement pricing. Choose the contractor that you can relate to, are most comfortable with, and listens to your concerns generally works out the best.
After choosing your contractor and accept the bid you should receive a contract with details about the project, including timelines, budget, materials. Review the contract carefully before you sign. Last, but not least, let the work begin! In a few short weeks (or months) it will be time to enjoy your new space, and you’ll have the peace of mind knowing you chose the best contractor for the job.
